Untitled (A Matter of Vested Interests) is a video performance meant to bring emotional damage, wrought by a destructive relationship with my father, into the physical. In this piece, I draw from how I view my family, myself, and the ways in which certain societal gazes have continued to impact both of these entities since my childhood. The song in the background comes from a CD that my mother gave me, which became scratched in my car over time. Both the choice of song and the decision to use the scratched version evinces a carelessness and irony in terms of the disjointed way I tend to view serious family issues. I want the performance of dragging my body across the land to be emotionally and physically difficult but simultaneously camp. Yellowstone National Park 1998 is a series of images born from nostalgia and unease about the future. I return to not only images of a distinct memory from my childhood, but also a material typically associated with the crafts of a child: construction paper. It is unclear who in my family took these photographs. The anonymity of the photographer combined with the idyllic scenery and juvenile material creates objects that reference several different pasts at once.
